What To Expect During Excavation Work

Excavation work sounds intimidating. No one looks forward to heavy machinery digging up their yard or disrupting daily routine. If you know what to expect, you can plan. When it comes to timelines, cost and how much mess is gonna occur, we can give you a basic idea.

Why would excavation be necessary on my property?

One of the main reasons would be to repair, or put in, a sewer line or water line, or if your foundation is draining.

Septic system work and installing new underground utilities are also on the list.

In our area here in PA, aging clay sewer lines, common in older homes, often need to be replaced.

How can I prepare for my yard to be excavated?

Call Terry’s. We can come out to do an initial evaluation of your property; perform a camera inspection of your underground lines (if needed); and come up with a plan for work needed.

Before any crew arrives, you can assist by clearing the area of any cars or furniture; protecting flowers or shrubbery; keeping pets indoors and considering potential parking options for equipment.

What are Pennsylvania 811 Requirements?

PA One Call must be contacted at least 3 business days before digging. This free service, managed by the Pennsylvania One Call System, notifies utility companies to mark underground lines, preventing damages and ensuring safety.

Do I need permits to excavate my yard?

Each municipality differs, so you will need to research permit needs and regulations for your specific area. Small projects are usually exempt. Often there is a timeline for permit approval, which will factor into the work plan.

What happens when excavation starts?

The crew will arrive and set up the site, after ensuring that the final utility verification has been completed. Equipment will include backhoes and excavators appropriate for the job size.

The initial digging process will begin.

The noise level can vary. We work typical daytime hours and do our best not to disrupt other homes in your area. It might be a good idea to notify your neighbors about the potential for noise and/or equipment on the street if you know in advance of the work plans.

The site should be cleaned up daily and trenches should be secured overnight for safety.

Will there be any interruptions to my home?

There may be water service interruptions, but these tend to be brief and we will try to plan ahead with you. For sewer work, there will be limitations to bathroom access. Again, we will give you as much notice as possible.

Weather delays are always a consideration, but typically most work for water or sewer lines can be completed within a few days. More extensive excavation projects all have their own specific timelines.

What are the final steps in the excavation process?

After installing or repairing pipes, final inspections are required.

Depending on the scope of your project, you might also see grading and leveling, topsoil replacement, grass seed spread, or hardscape repair.
