French Drains: What are they and do I need one?

After a heavy rain, do you notice pooling in your yard? Do you notice soggy spots near your home’s foundation? Water drainage issues are common in Pittsburgh due to our terrain, clay soil and weather patterns.

French drains are a proven solution to mitigate drainage problems.

How do I know if I need a french drain?

In Pittsburgh we have a lot of hilly terrain, which can lead to poor drainage. Gravity pulls the water down steep slopes quickly, which leads to rapid runoff and erosion.

We also have clay soil in this area, which doesn’t absorb water well. Clay soil has very fine, flat mineral particles that pack tightly, giving it a smooth, dense texture and it holds a lot of water, and makes it slow to drain.

Seasonal rainfall and snow melt are factors and with many homes in Pittsburgh on the older side, the foundation is more vulnerable.

What problems can a french drain solve?

If you see standing water in your yard or your driveway, or notice water in your basement, a french drain would aid in better drainage.

If you see cracks in your foundation, notice a soggy lawn, or erosion on your slopes, a french drain could prevent further damage to your home and landscaping.

What happens if I ignore issues and don’t get a french drain?

The biggest and most expensive issue would be damage to your foundation, and the repair costs are very high for this type of damage. If your basement floods, you lose property and incur damage. Waterproofing your basement can help, but is only a bandaid and won’t fully protect you if you have a large flood.

You would also see damage to your yard, which can ultimately lower the value of your property. And face health concerns, due to mold.

What is a french drain?

Named after Henry French, an American lawyer and agriculturalist who described the system in his 1859 book Farm Drainage to improve farmland, a french drain is an underground drainage system that is designed to redirect water away from your home using a trench. The trench is filled with gravel or rock, and has a perforated pipe that collects the water and moves it away from buildings.

What types of french drains are there?

French drains can be built on the interior or exterior of your home. You can get an exterior french drain to help with drainage for your outside foundation or an interior french drain, which is helpful for basement waterproofing.

What is the process for getting a french drain installed?

First, we would come out and assess your property to identify water flow patterns and determine where a french drain needs placed.

With minimal disruption to your property, we will come out and excavate for the drain and install it. If you need topsoil replacement or landscape restoration, we can also help you with that.

We also offer a 1-year service warranty.

How long do french drains last?

French drains can last over 30 years when properly installed and built with quality materials. To keep your french drain maintained, keep the outlet areas clear, pay attention to clogs and get an annual inspection done.
