Planning for Your Bathroom Remodel
A beautiful bathroom to the outside eye might not be so beautiful behind the walls. Plumbing is a major component of any bathroom remodel and to help you save time and money, we compiled a few considerations to plan for as you tackle a new bathroom project.
The first thing you’ll want to do is estimate the age of your current plumbing system. In looking at your pipes, the materials tell a story. If you find lead or galvanized steel, you are looking at pre 1960’s; copper pipes are going to be between 1960s-1990s; and the most modern pipes are going to be made out of PEX/PVC. You can also research the age of the home to see when it was built for more information on the plumbing system.
How do I know if my plumbing system needs to be replaced?
Think about your current water pressure and if there seems to be any issues, as well as any corrosion, leaks, discoloration of water, constant clogs or even weird noises.
After you determine where you are currently with your plumbing, you can start to lay out what your new bathroom will look like.
Staying on the existing locations is going to be your most cost-effective option. If you want to move your toilet, sink or shower, you are looking at concrete work, drain line adjustments and venting challenges.
Why is venting important in my bathroom?
Venting removes that excess moisture and heat from running showers and baths. It also works to prevent any structural damage like peeling paint or mold. It’s also essential to your health, as venting reduces allergens and odors.
How do I choose the right toilet, sink and shower for my bathroom?
Choosing your new toilet, sink, vanity and other decor is the fun part of this process, but it also needs to stay in line with what works best for your home and the people using the space.
For your toilet: Standard height or Comfort height? If seniors or those with mobility issues will be using this bathroom, these factors are definitely a consideration.
You also need to determine if you want a water efficient toilet, which can save thousands of gallons of water every year, but the downside is reduced flushing power which could cause more clogs.
For your shower/tub: Do you want single or multi-head? What are the needs for your water pressure? Do you prefer a walk-in tub, need grab bars or barrier-free showers to accommodate anyone in the home?
For your sink: Undermount vs. vessel? Undermount are installed under the counter, giving a seamless look and easier clean up, while a vessel sits on top of the counter and offers more unique styling options. Single hole or widespread? Single-hole faucets offer a modern look with one handle and they are ideal for smaller sinks and ease of cleanup. Widespread faucets have two handles and a spout, requiring three holes. Might be more aesthetically pleasing and better for larger sinks, but expensive and more complex to install.
Plan for any potential problems in advance, from hidden water damage and mold, to work that was not done right the first time.
