The 5 Most Common Bathroom Remodeling Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

A bathroom remodel is an exciting time and for most homeowners, long overdue. A remodel adds value to your home, along with the comfort and function you’ve been wanting. After over 40 years of plumbing work in Pittsburgh, we’ve seen the same mistakes come up again and again, and they’re almost always avoidable.

What are some of the common issues when it comes to a bathroom remodel?

Budget

We started with budget because it’s one of the main factors that goes into a bathroom remodel and too often, the budget is underestimated.

Why do bathroom remodels go underestimated?

Labor, materials, permits, and unexpected problems add up fast. In a city like Pittsburgh with a mix of older homes and tight row-house layouts, there’s often more going on behind the drywall than you’d expect.

We recommend adding a 15–20% contingency buffer to your budget before you start. And get as much pricing from your contractor in advance so you can plan more efficiently.

Fixtures

Can I move my bathroom fixtures around in a remodel?

This answer is yes and no. If you want your toilet moved to the other side or your shower upgraded, figure out what is actually possible with your existing plumbing before the project starts.

Rerouting drain lines, venting and breaking into your subfloor gets expensive, like in the thousands. Before you choose your layout, talk to a licensed plumber and determine what those changes look like and if it’s worth the money you’d have to spend.

Venting

Older Pittsburgh homes tend to have undersized or poorly placed exhaust fans and a remodel is the perfect time to fix that. Moisture can rot your walls and you don’t want to encounter problems down the line.

How can I ensure proper ventilation in my bathroom?

Make sure your exhaust fan is properly sized for the room (measured in CFMs) and vented all the way to the outside. Sometimes it’s only vented to the attic, which is not as effective.

Waterproofing

You don’t want mold or damage to your walls due to poor waterproof insulation. While grout and tile look great, they don’t keep out moisture on their own.

How do I keep mold out of my bathroom?

You can install a waterproof membrane behind your shower walls to stop moisture and it’s very cost effective. You can find it at most local hardware stores.

DIY

Can I just do a bathroom remodel myself?

Bathroom plumbing involves permits, code compliance and experience. While it might seem like a cost saver to handle the work on your own, the implications of installing something incorrectly will cost a lot more in the long run.

Have the professionals manage the jobs that lend to experience and then you can step in for final touches like painting, decor and accessories.
