Noises Coming From Your Water Heater?

Your water heater isn’t the first thought on your mind, but when it starts to make noises, you start paying attention. An odd noise can be a cause for concern, so let’s break down some common noises and the action steps needed.

Not all noises mean something is wrong. Humming and ticking are actually normal and are often caused by heating elements and pressure changes. If sounds you normally hear seem to change, take note and call a pro.

Here are a few specific sounds to look (listen) out for:

Popping, knocking, whistling, hissing, crackling and tapping.

Tapping and crackling are likely lesser concerns, but still might require action.

Tapping could be caused by a heat trap or pipe expansion or contraction. It could be as easy of a fix as tightening loose fittings or even just a sound coming from normal thermal expansion. If the sound gets louder, call a pro.

Crackling could be from moisture buildup and the sound you are hearing is actually the condensation dripping onto the heater. If you hear this when the unit is just starting up, it’s common. If there are other noises or causes of concern with the crackling, call a pro.

Whistling could signify restricted water flow through the valve, potentially due to a mineral buildup or a partially closed valve. You can check the inlet valve, but should call a pro to diagnose any further issues.

Loud knocking could mean a pressure issue due to loose pipes, high water pressure or a worn valve. Damage might be happening to your pipes or connections so this is definitely the time to call a pro.

Popping could happen due to sediment buildup at the bottom of your tank. Minerals from the water can settle and harden. Call a prop to schedule a flush or to ensure you aren’t facing reduced efficiency.

If something seems off, it probably is. Some of the main danger signs to look out for when it comes to your water heater are:

  • Any hissing with visible steam or water
  • Strong gas smell (leave your house and call immediately)
  • Water leaking from your tank
  • No hot water combined with strange noises
  • Temperature/pressure relief valve leaking
  • Multiple warning signs happening all at once

Your water heater communicates through sounds and now you know what to listen for and when to act.

Pittsburgh homes face unique challenges like hard water, older homes and cold winters, so it’s vital to schedule regular maintenance for your water heater to keep your home safe.
