How Do I Know if it’s a Plumbing Emergency?

What’s that smell? And why is it getting stronger? Could it be…a plumbing emergency?!

It seems like it’s coming from the basement…

As you walk down the stairs, you notice the floor looks wet. You look down, and water is pooling. It’s covering your floors, seeping through the ground and spreading an odor throughout the house.

Plumbing emergencies appear unexpectedly—and fast! But how do you know if it’s an actual emergency?

Here are a few signs that you need to call in the professionals (ahem, Super Terry!):

Plumbing Emergency #1: Backed Up Sewer System

This is the disaster outlined above. The toilet is making unspeakable sounds. Water is pooling where it most certainly shouldn’t (water shouldn’t be pooling anywhere!). And that smell. Why does such a smell exist?! It is truly the odor of nightmares.

Congratulations—your sewer system is backed up! This is a contest you certainly don’t want to win. It’s also one that you can’t fix by yourself. Your home tools are no match for a backed up sewer system. However, luckily, professionals have the skills and equipment to take care of this for you!

Plumbing Emergency #2: Clogged Toilets

Let’s take a minute to appreciate all that toilets do for us. They take a lot of crap from us, both literally and figuratively. And they mostly don’t complain. However, sometimes they simply have had enough. Cue, the clogged toilet.

One clogged toilet is annoying. More than one clogged toilet in your home or business is an issue. All the toilets being clogged is an emergency. Sometimes the issue is the result of something weird blocking your toilet—especially if you have kids who like to play “will this flush?!” Other times, especially when the problem is with all your toilets, it’s something bigger that without a doubt needs a professional’s skillset.

Plumbing Emergency #3: No Hot Water

It’s been a long day, and the only thing you want out of life right now is a nice, steaming hot shower. However, as you step into your shower, you realize your dream has become your nightmare. It’s not hot. It’s cold. Like, really cold.

If this is a recurring issue, and your significant other isn’t hogging all the hot water, then it’s time to pick up the phone. You could have a plumbing emergency on your hands. Most of the time, hot water loss can be attributed to issues with your water heater, but it can also be the result of a plumbing leak. Either way, make the call.
